With Waterford’s All-Ireland Minor hurling final looming on Sept 8th, we dragged panel member Barry Whelan away from his heavy weights schedule for a few minutes in an effort to get to know him better… Tramore people will be well aware of how good a hurler Barry Whelan is. On every team he plays for he makes an impact. He played on the Freshers team in WIT this year – where he is studying Social Care – and was nominated for their Player of the Year. He has been a stand out figure on Tramore teams for a number of years and was awarded the Young Player of the Year award for the club in 2012. He has previously made the county hurling teams at U14 and U16 and is now busy preparing for the Minor All-Ireland final against Galway. Other people might know Barry as the guy who kept taking his shirt off when the ‘Celebrity Bainisteoir’ cameras were rolling in Tramore last year. So to find out what really makes Barry tick we sat him down in the clubhouse last night and asked him some rapid fire questions:

Favourite position: Corner back

Favourite cartoon as a kid: Southpark

When you were growing up what did you want to be? A guard

My most treasured possession: Ipod

My last meal would be: Steak and potatoes

Best ab exercise: Barry Whelan’s patented abdominal crunch

Best player to train in the club: Martin Whelan

Best dressed in the club: Eoin ‘Geordie Shore’ Kiely

Favourite holiday destination? New York

If you were batman who would be your robin: Daithi Purcell

In the movie of my life I’d be played by: Will Ferrell

Stranded on an island, what are your 3 essential items? Hurley; Xbox; Will Ferrell box sets

What would you buy with your last €50? A load of Jager slammers

Favourite player to watch growing up: Darragh Ryan (Stylish Wexford full back quite similar to Barry’s brother Conor)

Favourite sibling – Conor or Sinead: Conor! (Sinead submitted this question which might have influenced the answer)

Longest in the shower in the club: Ciaran Crowley

What is the highlight of your career to date? Playing against Clare in this year’s minor championship.

Who is your toughest opponent? Kevin Casey from Ballyduff Upper, a corner forward I had to mark a lot in the college and he always gave me a tough time.

What is your favourite sport besides from hurling? Basketball

What sports person do you most admire? Kevin Garnett (We had to Google this one, American basketball player apparently, previously of the Boston Celtics)

What is the best bit of hurling wisdom you’ve been given? Try to read the game and play from the front – don’t wait for your man to move to the ball first.

What advice would you have for young players? Always keep your hurley with you, take it to bed with you.

Best coach you trained under? Shane Dunphy (Shane was lurking in the background for this question so we might need a recount!)

If you could attend any sporting event in the world what would it be? NBA basketball finals

So now you’ve seen inside the mind of a modern day corner back. Make sure to cheer on Barry and the rest of the Waterford team on Sept 8th in Croke Park. Barry and his Tramore teammates will be playing in the Eastern Junior hurling final on the weekend of Sept 28th.
