Under 12B Championship (09/06/14)

The Under 12 girls opened their championship season with a trip to Portlaw on a showery evening on Monday night.

There was a great turn out with 20 girls travelling with good support from parents and club mentors. Unfortunately at this grade, the maximum number of starters is 12 so there was a difficult selection for Johnny Dunphy, the under 12's coach. It's highly encouraging to see such numbers, and every effort will be made to ensure all the girls get game time.

The match started with Portlaw on top, with a few very strong players. The Tramore goal was being peppered by long and short range shots with our goalkeeper, Ciara McMahon, pulling off a string of very impressive saves. Sarah Kennedy and Laura Byrne were stoutly repelling the Portlaw onslaught with Flora and Natasha assisting. Alannah and Cassie were complementing each other in midfield with Cassie covering a huge amount of ground and driving a lot of ball forward.

Shannon Barry and Emily Mulhare along with Ceri Griffin, Aoife Dunphy and Ciara Guidera worked hard to get a foot hold in the match.

The first score arrive by way of a point to Portlaw after 15 minutes. It was followed soon after by an inevitable goal. This spurred the Tramore girls into action and Cassie took a hold on the game and drove the ball forward with the assistance of Natasha and Flora who also struck some fine balls forward.

The girls effort finally told with Ceri pulling on a loose sliothar after a prolonged attack and finding the back of the net.

The half time score stood at 1-01 to 1-0.

The second half saw the introduction of Vera Rogers, Rachel O'Connor and Sinead Dunphy and the girls fought tirelessly to try to breach the Portlaw defence. There were a number of very fine efforts by Cassie, Flora and a very close effort by Aoife, but somehow the Portlaw goal lived a charmed existence.

Markedly the defence and Ciara in goal had a very quiet second half. Despite this the girls lost on the slimmest of margins.

With a small amount of tweaking and development of the skills, the girls will be ready for their second match next week against Clonea/St Mollerans. Venue, date and time will be confirmed later in the week.

Training is on Wednesday between 6 -7pm. All welcome including anyone new to the sport.
